I
wanted to do something different for Norma's Birthday and settled on a
dinner party with the friends we had met in Placencia/Seine Bight.
With the
assistance of Darlene, who is now working at The Inn at Robert's Grove, a
Garifuna Dinner and Drumming was arranged at the Kulcha Shak in Seine
Bight.
We all gathered at
the Kulcha Shak about 7:00 PM. They let us drink from an open bar and
then served a traditional Garifuna dinner. The main course of the
dinner was broiled Barracuda served with native vegetables and a brown fish
gravy on the Barracuda. It was very well prepared and most tasty.
After dinner the
bar was reopened and the entertainment began. The Garifuna people in
Belize are very proud of their heritage and are doing all that they can to
teach the younger generations the traditions, music and dance so that they
to might teach their offspring as the come along.
Part one of the
presentation was a demonstration of Garifuna Dancing by the younger
children, some in costume. I would estimate the age these children to be
from about 8 to 12 years old. Some of the dances were performed by only
girls and some were performed by girls and boys. It would have been difficult
not to observe the parent's interest and pride in the children as they danced
for us.
After the children
danced, the next part of the program was a presentation of Garifuna Music
by a group of teenagers playing various instruments and singing. This
group was dressed all in white with colorful headgear.
After about 15
minutes of the teenagers musical program, the adults blended in with
them playing instruments and giving forth with an occasional Garifuna
song. The small children came back and danced some more and even got
a few of us involved.
We want to thank
Darlene and all of the members of the Kulcha Shak for a most enjoyable and insightful
evening.
